Tobacco use: Twice Once again we find Alice fighting for her life, and the life of her friends, in this newest installment of the highly popular zombie apocalypse franchise. The film starts with Alice stuck in the most secluded of all hive locations. Unable to leave at her own will, everything changes when a group of agents are hired to infiltrate her holding station and get her to the surface. They have to get her out alive past zombies, robotic guards and the worst of all movie villains, “The Red Queen”. This 3D film fits the vibe of the entire franchise and finds its way through global hotspots such as Tokyo, New York and Moscow. A great addition to the film is the return of Michelle Rodriguez, one of the leads in the first film who unfortunately met her demise at the end of film one. This film is filled with a perfect mix of gore, white knuckles, and scenes that will jolt you out of your seat. Although I very much enjoyed this film, it did feel as if it were a “bridge movie” to get us from the last film to the next and final film. Twice during the movie one character, Barry Burton played by actor Kevin Durand, was smoking a cigar. The male character was in his mid-40’s and made out to be the masculine, rough talking, gun shooting sidekick of the film. When he was first introduced he had a cigar in his mouth and was presented as being the “tough guy” of the movie (guns in hand). The second time that he smoked was just before he performed the “heroic moment” of the movie by putting his guns down and walked in the line of fire to save his friend. This character showed a need to smoke in order to be brave which was not needed at all. The character can be portrayed as a “tough guy” just by his muscles, guns and the way he talks. He didn’t need to smoke in order to look the part. This took away from the moment and in the end the scene lost all of its power because of the presents of smoking. Without the cigar it seemed like he would not have the courage to stand up to the villains, which is dumb because all of the other characters were able to stand up to the bad guy without any tobacco and they were just fine.

Dark Knight Rises

Rating: 14AGenre: ActionStarring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne HathawayDirected by: Christopher NolanThe Dark Knight Rises is the newest and  final instalment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) returns to his vigilantism career after Bane (Tom Hardy) , a new super villain takes over the streets of Gotham. This movie was excellent. One of the best action movies I’ve ever seen. It’s not as good as the previous instalment, The Dark Knight, but for an action movie, it’s really good. It had all the elements of a good action movie, a great hero, awesome fight scenes, mind-blowing action sequences and one of the best villains in movie history. The movie was a great ending to the Batman saga and so far, the best movie I’ve seen all year. Not only was this a great movie, but I don’t recall ever seeing any smoking in it. Which is good because Batman is usually a role model for younger kids. So because of the lack of smoking, and the quality of this movie, I give this movie a 5/5 rating.

Ted

Movie Genre: Comedy, FantasyMovie Rating: 14AOpening Date: June 29th, 2012Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Seth MacFarlaneDirector: Seth MacFarlane It all started with a Christmas miracle and a little boy’s wish upon a star. John (Mark Wahlberg) wished his teddy bear and best friend would come alive. The next day, Ted (Seth MacFarlane) became his best friend forever until Lori (Mila Kunis) came along and offered an ultimatum. It was her, his loving girlfriend of four years or Ted, his crude, inappropriate, hilarious teddy bear. Through compelling action and companionship the three of them become closer than ever and learn valuable lessons about each other. The plot had so much potential for comedy with a teddy bear that can talk and gets caught up in implausible situations and they didn’t fail. I like the chemistry between Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane, their style of comedy played well off of each other. Overall there was nothing I didn’t like about the movie and recommend it to anyone who likes “Family Guy-esqe” humour.Unfortunately, there is one scene in the beginning of the movie where John and Ted are sitting on the couch watching TV before John has to go to work. During this scene, John is holding a cigarette the whole time. Ironically, he didn’t smoke it once so I felt it was unnecessary to have in the scene at hand. Plus I felt it added no extra meaning to the scene at hand.Rating: On Screen Smoking Rating for the Movie: 3 out of 5Movie Rating if the Movie Didn’t Contain Smoking: 4 out of 5

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

Rating: G  Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are stilling trying to get back to their home, New York City. The animals buy a circus in attempt to get back to The Big apple.  With Chantel DeBois on their trail, they may decide that going back to the Zoo may not be the best decision.“Europe’s Most Wanted” was okay, but definitely not better than the other two. The movie seemed like it was rushed. There were gaps in the story. Other than that, it was a funny, entertaining, family movie. I liked the story but think it should have had more time worked on it.This movie had one instance of smoking, sort of. After the Monkey signed a deal with the American, He lit a banana and smoked. This will definitely encourage kids that “smoking is cool”. This instance of smoking did not need to be in the film.If it didn’t have smoking, I’d give it a 3/5 stars , But, it did. So I give it  2/5 Stars.

Brave

Rating: PGMerida Is tired of being a princess, she has to take all the lessons, follow all the rules and worst of allAlways has to listen to her mother. When she asks a witch to change her fate, bad things happen, and only she can fix it, “She just has to be BRAVE”.Pixar has done it again! Brave was a delightful, funny and unexpected. It took a while for me to understand a few parts. This awesome movie, so far, deserves the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The best part of this film is that the trailers did not give any of the big plot points away. There no instances of smoking in ‘Brave’.I give it a 3/5, excellent movie. Definitely a worth watching.

Prometheus

Rating: 14AGenre:  Sci-fiOpening Date: June 8th 2012Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize TheronDirector: Ridley ScottTaking place some 80 years in the future and about 50 years before Alien, Prometheus is about two archaeologists discover a similar planetary map in cave drawing and ancient artefacts from different unconnected civilizations thousands of years and miles apart. They visit the planet from the map in hopes of discovering mankind’s origins, but they soon learn that they are not alone on the planet and their hosts may not be friendliest species.Prometheus was excellent. Ridley Scott returns to the Alien universe with many of elements  that made the original so successful. It had suspense, so much that I could barely look away from the screen. It was visually stunning. I didn’t see it in 3D, but I kind of regret it now, it was THAT good! As for the acting, it was alright, Michael Fassbender was great as the android David, and no performances really stuck out as being really bad. Scott’s direction is what really stole the show though, he proves that he is still the king of Sci-fi horror, there really is no one who compares.                  There was one scene in which I saw smoking: It was when the captain comes out of his cryogenic sleep. There was only smoking in the movie for a minute and it did not add to the scene at all. I thought that the smoking was completely unnecessary.                  Overall, I give the movie a rating of 3/5. If there wasn’t smoking in the movie i would have  given it a 5/5. But since there was, I give it a 3 out of five.

I didn’t find it very necessary, but it was only on screen for a few seconds and no attention was drawn to it. The other instance is when the geologist is lost in the caves and he is smoking marijuana in his space suit. Again, it’s not really necessary, but is only on screen for a few seconds and is purely for comedic relief.                  Overall, I give the movie a rating of 5/5.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Rating: PGOpening Date: June 1st2012Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize TheronDirector: Rupert SandersIn Snow White and the Huntsman, the only person fairer than the evil queen is Snow White. Unable to tolerate this blow to her vanity she orders a huntsman to retrieve snow white and have her killed. In this twist on the tale, the huntsman becomes her mentor and trains her to become a warrior threatening the queen’s reign. This action packed tale of good versus evil kept us entertained from start to finish. After the murder of her father, Snow White was kept locked away until she came of age and managed to escape through the dark forest. At which point a huntsman was sent to retrieve her, where instead he joined forces with her in the battle to defeat the queen. Along with being an action adventure, the movie also proves to be humorous with moments of romance, while meeting some colourful characters along the way. Although the movie follows the classic tale, there were scenes that remained unclear that left us wondering the significance to the plot. Parts of the film were predictable yet innovative and captivating. The film, rated PG, did not contain any smoking or tobacco use. However there was brief use of alcohol by the huntsman used to “drown his sorrows”, but this was not a main focus in the movie. Overall Snow White and the Huntsman is a fresh take on the timeless classic earning a 4/5 rating for great chemistry between cast members as well as being an action filled adventure.

Dark Shadows

Movie rating: 14AOpening date: May 11, 2012Starring: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva green, Helena Bonham carter and much moreMovie genre: comedy/fantasy             Director: Tim BurtonAn imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins is set free and returns to his ancestral home where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Overall the movie was good and I would recommend it to others.  There were a lot of funny parts in the movie and great acting by all the cast members. I did not like the fact that there was smoking and drinking in this moviethat really made me sad. The secondary characters who were young adults were always smoking in a group of people surrounding a van and in one scene around a campfire. Thankfully there was no product placement or brand of tobacco shown. I felt really sad to see a group of people passing around rolled up tobacco, it wasn’t necessary to show smoking in these scenes. I definitely wouldn’t miss it if the smoking scenes were removed from the movie, I did rate it lower because of this!
