Prometheus

Movie Name: PrometheusRating: 14AGenre:  Sci-fiOpening Date: June 8th 2012Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize TheronDirector: Ridley ScottTaking place some 80 years in the future and about 50 years before Alien, Prometheus is about two archaeologists discover a similar planetary map in cave drawing and ancient artefacts from different unconnected civilizations thousands of years and miles apart. They visit the planet from the map in hopes of discovering mankind’s origins, but they soon learn that they are not alone on the planet and their hosts may not be friendliest species.Prometheus was excellent. Ridley Scott returns to the Alien universe with many of elements  that made the original so successful. It had suspense, so much that I could barely look away from the screen. It was visually stunning. I didn’t see it in 3D, but I kind of regret it now, it was THAT good! As for the acting, it was alright, Michael Fassbender was great as the android David, and no performances really stuck out as being really bad. Scott’s direction is what really stole the show though, he proves that he is still the king of Sci-fi horror, there really is no one who compares.                  I only recall there being two instances of smoking: The first was when the captain comes out of his cryogenic sleep. I didn’t find it very necessary, but it was only on screen for a few seconds and no attention was drawn to it. The other instance is when the geologist is lost in the caves and he is smoking marijuana in his space suit. Again, it’s not really necessary, but is only on screen for a few seconds and is purely for comedic relief.                  Overall, I give the movie a rating of 5/5.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Rating: PGOpening Date: June 1st2012Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize TheronDirector: Rupert SandersIn Snow White and the Huntsman, the only person fairer than the evil queen is Snow White. Unable to tolerate this blow to her vanity she orders a huntsman to retrieve snow white and have her killed. In this twist on the tale, the huntsman becomes her mentor and trains her to become a warrior threatening the queen’s reign. This action packed tale of good versus evil kept us entertained from start to finish. After the murder of her father, Snow White was kept locked away until she came of age and managed to escape through the dark forest. At which point a huntsman was sent to retrieve her, where instead he joined forces with her in the battle to defeat the queen. Along with being an action adventure, the movie also proves to be humorous with moments of romance, while meeting some colourful characters along the way. Although the movie follows the classic tale, there were scenes that remained unclear that left us wondering the significance to the plot. Parts of the film were predictable yet innovative and captivating. The film, rated PG, did not contain any smoking or tobacco use. However there was brief use of alcohol by the huntsman used to “drown his sorrows”, but this was not a main focus in the movie. Overall Snow White and the Huntsman is a fresh take on the timeless classic earning a 4/5 rating for great chemistry between cast members as well as being an action filled adventure.

Dark Shadows

Movie rating: 14AOpening date: May 11, 2012Starring: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva green, Helena Bonham carter and much moreMovie genre: comedy/fantasy             Director: Tim BurtonAn imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins is set free and returns to his ancestral home where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Overall the movie was good and I would recommend it to others.  There were a lot of funny parts in the movie and great acting by all the cast members. I did not like the fact that there was smoking and drinking in this moviethat really made me sad. The secondary characters who were young adults were always smoking in a group of people surrounding a van and in one scene around a campfire. Thankfully there was no product placement or brand of tobacco shown. I felt really sad to see a group of people passing around rolled up tobacco, it wasn’t necessary to show smoking in these scenes. I definitely wouldn’t miss it if the smoking scenes were removed from the movie, I did rate it lower because of this!
